  1. Getting More than You Pay For

Posted by Steve E on May 15th 2013

The advent of LED technology is perfect for the planted aquarium tank fan. The folks at BuildMyLED are LED experts, and they have put together lights that are beautifully built at a very competitive price. They know a whole lot more about light spectrum than I do, and they helped pick a combination that works beautifully. Excellent advice, excellent service and a truly fine product with a quality build that is unmatched. What more could you ask?

  2. fantastic - 2 x 48" fixtures @ 90 and 75 degree angles

Posted by Justin on May 4th 2013

I've been running a 150 gallon fresh water discus tank with odd dimensions, and it's planted to boot. I previously ran an 8 fixture Teklight Elite with T5 Giesemann bulbs. It's a great fixture without doubt, but after visiting the site, conducting some due diligence, and speaking with Nick Klase, I ordered two 48" fixtures with a dimmer and tank mounts. The quality of the ballasts and the fixtures speak for themselves. The quality of the light in the tank is absolutely fantastic and my plants and fish have never looked so good. I prefer clean lines and elegant profiles on aquariums and these are fixtures that fit the bill. In my opinion there's really nothing else on the market that compares at any price point. The tank mounts are of good quality and make tank maintenance a breeze. The basic manual dimmer gets the job done and the price makes it just right for freshwater needs. Perhaps the greatest point I can make is that Mr. Klase was knowledgeable, professional, and customer service has been outstanding thus far...this alone makes these lights even more appealing. I have no doubt that LED's are absolutely capable when configured and used appropriately.

  3. Awesome light!

Posted by Dave on May 2nd 2013

I had decent lighting before. I wanted an upgrade, but didn't like the electric consumption that MH consumed. I began looking into LED lighting. After an endless and daunting search I came across the Build My LED site. I was very impressed. I loved the idea of the full customization of the spectrums and the affordability of this unit was a plus. When I received the unit, I was even more impressed with the quality of the craftsmanship. Within 2 days of having the lights, my corals have opened even more fully and I have noticed colors pop that I have never seen! I love the shimmering effect without the disco ball look like many other LED lights produce. I am very happy with my purchase and my energy bill loves the lower energy consumption! I am very pleased and would highly recommend thirst lights over any MH unit and these lights compete with some of the more expensive LED reef lights available on the market. And even those units don't offer full customization or full spectrum coverage which is essential to corals!

  4. Untested on plants so far.

Posted by Hazen on Apr 30th 2013

Love the look, size, and service. Am very impressed with the output and dimming. I used a combo of LED's suggested as being most popular with planted aquarists. My KILOWATT reads them as using .1kwh per hour. (that's two 4' strips on full) They do get warm, but not hot. Ambient temperature here is 78deg. Only thing i have any worry about is the layout of the LEDS might lead to some weird color shadows. I hope the overlapping light cones cover this up. I expect i'll just get some extra twinkle out of it. Excited to report back on plant growth. Can't imagine a better product for the money or the investment. Bulbs are expensive, as is electricity here in Hawaii.

  5. World of difference

Posted by Matt Meaney on Apr 26th 2013

I spent days/weeks working on the proper spectrum with the guys at build my LED. Not only was the customer service awesome the final result was jaw dropping. The light is pure, intense, BRIGHT, and the coverage is perfect. It is a real close replication to the tropical, south american sun, my fish are accustomed too.

  6. AWESOME fixture & great customer service!

Posted by Unknown on Apr 13th 2013

I designed my fixture on-line to enhance the colors in my zoa garden tank. The fact that I could do this was the number one factor in choosing BuildmyLED. It is a 12" fixture, which fits perferctly on top of the 10 gallon eclipse. I set the fixture up & the colors really popped. Several weeks later the fixture stopped working. I called the guys at BuildmyLED. They told me to bring it in. THEY REBUILT ME A NEW FIXTURE THE SAME DAY! Customer service A+, Bnag for buck A+, designing my own fixture - PRICELESS

  7. Very happy with result

Posted by Unknown on Apr 9th 2013

I received my custom planted LED and I am very pleased with the results. Using the LED configurator I was able to get the CRI and color I was after and still get great PAR. The configurator is unique in the detail of the data generated. The build quality of the fixtures is excellent and the clever design of the reflector and diffuser lens blends the different colored LEDs very well, with no noticeable "disco" effect. My only suggestion for improvement, is to offer more efficient white LEDs such as the Cree XPG for an extra premium like the UV LEDs.

  8. Great but could be brigher

Posted by Tommy on Apr 3rd 2013

I ordered this light for my 48" long tank and about 18" deep to replace my T5. The ordering process was smooth and easy, so was shipping. The light came brand new and looks good, "plug and play". The only thing keeping me from giving 5 stars is that it's not as bright as I thought it would be. I place it at the front of the tank and shining back but still cannot cover the whole tank. I ordered 90 degree optic. The dimmer is working but from 50% bright to 100% makes to different. So from very dim (0) to all bright (100), I can only tell the different from 0-50, and not 50-100. It could be my dimmer or it could be how it's made. I would recommend this light for a narrow tank. I hope my review helped.

  9. Perrrrrrfect...

Posted by Elliot Danish on Mar 28th 2013

Got exactly what I wanted and great communication throughout the process. I wouldn't go anywhere else. The only thing I'd add is maybe some sort of maintenance instructions IF they require maintenance at all. Again, that'd only be a bonus though. I'd highly recommend the dimmer as well! These lights will light your world up. I thought my T5's were bright... whew... love it.

  10. Customized Super Actinic

Posted by C. Evans on Jan 11th 2013

After my experience purchasing a custom reef spectrum, I knew that the second fixture I was going to buy was going to be a Build My LED light. Not only are their products awesome, excellent light intensity and penetration, but the level of customer service has been unmatched. They helped me at every step. When I decided that I wanted a custom configured fixture, they took the time to talk with me in depth about what my goals were, to really help me get the exact lighting I wanted on my aquarium. I ended up starting with their existing Super Actinic configuration and switched out a few lights to meet my needs. In the end the light was a perfect complement to my other Build My LED fixture. My corals are doing great, and viewing the tank is a pleasure. I highly recommend these lights!
